Eoin Butler: writer, journalist and Mayoman of the Year

Tripping Along The Ledge

Spectacular chat show bust-up between Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal from 1971. Cavett’s account of the fracas, published in the New York Times in the wake of Mailer’s death in 2007, is here. If you haven’t time for either, let me synopsise in five words: Norman Mailer was a dick.

P.S. Cavett’s follow-up blog post on the topic, also highly recommended, is here.

Drunken arsehole on that occasion but a brilliant writer nonetheless.

  2. Gregor T. Says:

Btw; Whats the fingerbowl bit about?

  3. Eoin Says:

Agreed Gregor. Re: fingerbowl. I’ve always assumed he meant that, while his intellect would require two extra chairs, the intellects of his adversaries were so tiny they could be accomodated in fingerbowls.

Bizarre how this pretty obvious explanation still doesn’t seemt to have occurred to Cavett even yet.

  4. Gregor T. Says:

    Ahh…makes sense to me yea!

  5. Darragh Says:

Mailer reminds me of John C.Reilly’s character in Step Brothers here.

  6. Eoin Says:

To my shame, I not only saw but also laughed out loud for the duration of Step Brothers.

Not sure about the John C. Reilly thing – although I think his Jewfro is slightly Seth Rogan.

  7. Darragh Says:

to your shame? that film is brilliant and a future sleeper hit, mark my words. Their first exchange at the dinner table – comedy gold. “last time I heard that joke I laughed so hard that fell off my dinosaur”

Anyway, it’s when his head is all vexed and wrinkled up at the beginning.

  8. Eoin Says:

Just watched a couple of YouTube clips and laughed out loud again. Esp. this one…

  9. Darragh Says:

    haha my personal fave.

For a clip that is already fucking hilarious, John C’Reilly’s little red undies are the icing on the cake.

  10. Eoin Says:

Well, you can’t post that and not post this…

“I told you not to wake them up…!”

[…] Heady times… EoinButler.com is currently experiencing an unprecidented surge in popularity, albeit slightly outside of my target demographic. So what’s wooing the masses? Is it my geographical nous? Those racy cheerleader upskirts? Or that rollercoaster thread in which Darragh and I debated the artistic merits of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s Step Brothers movie?
