Guess which bankrupt megastar is auctioning off a pile of their crap in Los Angelus today? (Update: Except it’s just been cancelled. B’ah.)

From the New York Times:

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The king’s crown, scepter, ice cream cart and life-size Lego model of Darth Vader are for sale.

Those items, along with the statues of E.T. and the cast-iron gate decorated with the royal coat of arms of Britain, could belong only to Michael Jackson, whose style of self-enshrinement has always mixed the regal and the childlike…

Put together, the items form a picture of their owner that isn’t exactly surprising, given Mr. Jackson’s very public eccentricity. But in its sheer quantity the collection is a revealing tour through some of Mr. Jackson’s obsessions…

When Mr. Jackson likes something, he really likes it. Bronze garden statues of young children frolic by the dozen. Disney cartoon characters, along with Peter Pan — whose Neverland island gave the Jackson estate its name — pop up in paintings and figurines, sometimes dressed like their collector.

Except its just been cancelled. From the Los Angelus Times:

But today, said Darren Julien, president and chief executive of Julien’s Auctions, which had been hired to conduct the sale, “we reached a resolution and we’re very happy about. It allows Michael to retain ownership of his possessions. He contracted us to conduct the auction and had a change of mind for whatever reason. And we honor and respect that. We’re very happy with the outcome.”

There’s a pretty amazing slideshow of the exhibition here. Gotta admit, if I was a kid and he invited me to a sleepover – even knowing what we now know – I’d still be very, very tempted.
