Norm MacDonald gets fired (1998)

It is said that Edith Piaf could sing the phone book and it would be beautiful. Well, Norm MacDonald could read the phone book and it would be funny. Here’s a 1998 Letterman appearance, the day he was fired from Saturday Night Live.

No one knows for sure why SNL fired Norm. The executive he mentioned here, Don Ohlmeyer, was a friend of O.J. Simpson. So Norm’s relentless pillorying of the former sports star may have had something to do with it.

After the jump, happier times. Two all-time classic Norm moments from 1997 and 2010… Read the rest of this entry »

The Pokemon Directive

Back in Ballyhaunis – and broadband (hurrah!) – for the weekend. Finally, catching up on last week’s De Niro-starring episode of SNL. It was patchy as these things are, but I did really enjoy the host’s turn as Robert Ludlum-esque thriller writer Harlan Kane. The full, ever-more-ridiculously titled bibilography in full after the jump: Read the rest of this entry »

More Cowbell (2000)

It was ten years ago last month that this classic SNL sketch first aired. When it has turned up on YouTube since then, it tends to be pulled down fairly quickly. So if you haven’t seen it before, hurry! Meanwhile, after the jump, I will single-handedly suck every last drop of fun out of the thing by rationalising exactly it’s so funny. Isn’t Sinead O’Connor overdue a massive, grovelling apology from absolutely everybody?

In 1992, Sinead O’Connor ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live as a protest against paedophilia in the Catholic Church and the complicity of the church hierarchy. It was viewed as an act of career suicide. The following day, steamrollers crushed hundreds of her CDs outside Rockefeller Center to huge cheers from protesters. On the next SNL, presenter Joe Pesci quipped that “if it had been my show, I would have gave her such a smack.”

A few days later, O’Connor was booed off the stage at a Bob Dylan Tribute in Madison Square Garden. (That last clip is particularly well worth watching, by the way, both for the virulence of the abuse directed towards her, and the courage with which she stands up to it.) If, like me, you’re addicted to watching US comedy late night shows online, here’s a tip that you may find useful. As you may know, The Daily Show and Colbert Report recently stopped streaming internationally. Others like Letterman, Conan, SNL etc. allow only partial access to online videos. THIS IS FUNNY

It’s actually sad the extent to which I can relate to this song… The shittiness of my car, moreover, only seems to make my car a more attractive target to those joyless, pedantic drones that enforce the laws I’m, technically, supposed to obey. Read the rest of this entry »
